It’s really not news when an academic calls for the dissolution of gun rights, but such suggestions from an ivory-tower dweller usually call for registration or some other half-step toward confiscation. But not Tom H. Hastings at Portland State University.
Last month, he called for repeal of the 2nd Amendment in an editorial published in the Wisconsin Gazette.
It made us recall the comments of another professor last year, Mary Margaret “Meg” Penrose, a full-time professor on the faculty of the Texas A&M University School of Law, who also advocated that the Constitutional basis for gun ownership and use be scrapped.
For his part, Hastings begins, “What country fetishizes, lionizes, valorizes, idolizes, and sacralizes guns as much as does our United States? OK, possibly Mozambique — the only country with an AK47 on its flag, but really, it’s long past time to end this obsessive ‘My Precious’ attachment of Americans to instruments of death.”
And then: “The only logical path, given the clearly decided role of the Second Amendment, is to repeal it.”
The 2nd Amendment recognizes, codifies, and protects an underlying right to personal security. It stops people like Hastings from using force — local, state, and federal government — to subjugate everyone.
So, Hastings is right on one point — if his goal is to make people subjects and not citizens, then the 2nd Amendment must be repealed. The second entry in the Bill of Rights is a bulwark against any government entity disarming the people, and thank goodness it’s there.
Sadly, about a quarter of U.S. citizens agree with Hastings and want the 2nd Amendment repealed.
