Know Your Ammo – Missouri

There are so many choices of ammunition on the market today, but not every type is perceived the same in the eyes of the law. Watch Independent Program Attorney John Schleiffarth explain how the type of ammo you use could affect you.

John Schleiffarth: Hi I’m John Schleiffarth, Independent Program Attorney for U.S. LawShield in Missouri. Today, I’d like to talk about choice of ammunition and also about certain types of ammunition prohibited in the state of Missouri. Generally, Missouri does not regulate ammunition. the one exception is Missouri does prohibit ammunition that has an independent explosive charge. So for instance, if you fire a round from your shotgun and upon impact, it explodes that’s the type of ammunition you can’t use in Missouri. It is prohibited. Again, an independent explosive charge.

The other thing you need to think about is that federal laws do apply to the state of Missouri. Almost without exception, the federal government outlaws armor piercing rounds. So within the state of Missouri, you can’t use armor piercing rounds.

I sometimes get the questions whether sometimes your choice of ammunition can lead to a criminal charge. If it’s a prohibited ammunition it can otherwise it can’t. Same goes for a civil lawsuit, you’re not going to face enhanced civil penalties based on your choice of ammunition. If you’re trying to make a choice on what size of ammunition to use 9mm, .40 caliber, .45 caliber. That’s a choice you should make, on my advice, entirely on what ammunition is most comfortable for you with what type of round you shoot best.

Your choice of ammunition, your size of caliber for instance, the type of commonly shot ammunition that’s not illegal is not going to create any enhanced penalties if you have to use a firearm to defend yourself.
