Law Shield members probably already know that the road to gaining reasonable carry laws in the nation’s capital will be difficult. But perhaps you’re not aware that sane rules for any legal carry are facing at least one major roadblock.
“You have a mayor who hates guns,” new Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser told a crowd at the St. Augustine Catholic Church earlier this month.
“If it was up to me, we wouldn’t have any handguns in the District of Columbia,” the Washington Post quoted the mayor as saying. “I swear to protect the Constitution and what the courts say, but I will do it in the most restrictive way as possible.”
A federal judge has declared the city’s previous ban on the legal carry of firearms unconstitutional and is considering whether to hold the city in contempt for its latest set of rules based on emergency gun laws. The permanent law was approved in a 11-1 vote.
Those laws require a gun owner to demonstrate a need for a concealed carry permit and regulate how the owner can obtain a permit and under what circumstances it would be valid.
