Can I Carry To a Sporting Event | Pennsylvania

The following is a video transcript.

Carrying at a K-12 Event

We are Penn State, right? That’s what you’re supposed to say when you hear that. And the question becomes: “Can you carry at a sporting event?” Now, what we’re talking about is for Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania only. We can’t talk about the other states. But, when it comes to Pennsylvania law, the only restriction you have to consider is whether or not the location of the event has a Kindergarten through 12th grade—something that’s recognized by the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

And the reason behind that is because of the Goslin case. But, we highly recommend against carrying a firearm, notwithstanding how some people interpret the Goslin case, at a K-12 activity or event or school grounds. That would include things like baseball fields, soccer fields, or whatever it is.

College or Professional Sports Carrying

So the bottom line is, when it comes to it, can you carry on campus?

You have to know that when it comes to collegiate matters or professional sporting events, there is no law in Pennsylvania. Now, a lot of places, such as the NFL, definitely have policies against it. They might have magnetometers, they have wands and stuff like that or search your bag all in part to try and enforce that policy.

The worst thing they can do is either deny you admission or send you out and kick you out. If you still remain there, like any other private property owner, you could be subjected to defiant trespass. So, you know, that’s something to consider at that level.

When it comes to high school and below, including pee wee football and games that are on K-12 premises that are owned by K-12, it doesn’t matter if it’s private or it’s publicly owned, that is somewhere that you should tread very, very carefully with, because, notwithstanding that interpretation of Goslin, a person even with a license to carry a firearm shall not carry on a K-12 facility.

If you have questions about the law when it comes to the right to keep and bear arms when it comes to sporting events, we’re happy to talk to you. Give us a call on the non-emergency number at U.S. LawShield. That way you get in touch with your Independent Program Attorney, which for Pennsylvania is us, and we’ll be happy to talk to you.
